MIKE & HUGHE'S 7TH ANNUAL JULY 5TH PARTY

OK to cap off the whirlwind 48hrs that began at the crack of dawn on July 4th (Please go back in time and read all the entries when you have say about 3hrs time free), Mike and I hold our 7th Annual July Fourth Gala not on July 4th, but whenever the Penns Landing fireworks are held. You got that? I have to admit I was photo fatigued by the time I got to Saturday night, so I barely have all 28 of my guests photographed, and I didn't take a darn picture of my spread. I will say one of the most popular dishes was a banana bread cream loaf by John Soden, his girlfriend, PR Style Maven Sarah Doheny http://www.yubpr.com/ ; also in the picture is Andrew and Scott trying to figure out the light sabers I distributed to my guests.

On the balcony I found my friend Bob chatting up my friend Phyllis. I used to play softball with Ball when I first arrived in Philadelphia a few years back. Bob just competed in the Philadelphia Schuylkill Ironman Competition, have you ever heard of anything more vile than swimming in the Schuylkill River (I asked him if he kicked any dead bodies or cars, he didn't). He's a brave man. Chip is enjoying the festivities, but I really just wanted to show off my garden.
Everyone always congregates in the kitchen. At one point more than half the guys could be found here. I guess they want to be close to the booze and the ice cream sandwiches that I had in the freezer. L-R Jeremy, Mike, George and Henry. He and Chip just celebrated their 17th anniversary.
The Jeffs make another appearance, thanks for the wine, chips and oh boy cookies that I found Sunday morning as I prepared to fold the bag. I bet you were wondering why I didn't put them out last night. What the Heck is bob looking at, is it fireworks time?

OK Mike breaks out his PS3 and everyone takes a turn on the track. Next to George is my fabulous friend and man about town Matthew Vlahos
Jeff makes a point, Bob and kiss killer smileTLA's Rich Wolf with Susan Helfrich, PIGLFF's Developmental Director Thom Cardwell with journalist Mary Patel stops by for a few. Mary is heading to Miami and is going to miss opening night of the film festival on Thursday. The two Tim's make an appearance. We never see enough of them. They are always busy at home playing their WII
The 12th Street Gym Posse - Henry, David, Gary & Mark (These guys don't play games)
My two M's

Norbert and Deming. Deming and I have known each other since the beginning of time, growing up a few towns away from each other in N.J. and then moving to Philly within months of each other. Deming is 6'1 and Norbert is much taller much to Deming's delight.
Earlier in the evening we gathered on the terrace to watch the fireworks. They
were a bit of a disappointment this year as the barge must have been moved a tad to the left. Usually the fireworks display is right between the two crosses, oh well. The party roared on until passed midnight, and no one seemed to mind, except me.
I did notice my tomato plant has ripened. That was exciting. Were there bees on my balcony?

The next day there was a double rainbowThis week begins the Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. It is going to be a blast and I will be covering every nook and cranny for you to see, but right now the best way to see all that is going to be shown and the parties that you can attend can be found on Philly Gay Calendar as Steve McCann one of the best sites with the 411: http://phillygaycalendar.com/filmfest/index.php

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM re: Party with the Siblings minus One sister, Crista

OK well if I didn't do enough in the last 24hrs (make sure you go back to Friday to see all the activities I covered; your either at home in your PJs as you took Monday off, or you're in the office where half your co-workers have taken off and its slow, so go do it), now it's the Saturday after Mom's birthday when we usually celebrate it with the family, and this year it's one of the significant birthdays, but you'll only know if you can read the cake. It's easy to shop for mom, she loves yellow roses or sunflowers. I had Mike wear his yellow shirt for the occassion; here he is with my bro-in-law Frank, who is married to my sister Margaret. A few of my nieces, Nicole (Janine), Kelsey (Margaret) & Lauren (Judy). I am so blessed to have a close loving family, aren't my girls cute? They really all look like their mothers too. Those poor dads:(
Mom is getting ready to blow out the candles. You can not appreciate how huge this cake is
until you see a side shot after it's been cut
Here's that trouble maker Ella, with her dad Joe looking on; He's married to my sister Tracy. Mom, Uncle Charlie Libertella, Aunt Rosie Shannon and Aunt Angie Riccardi
My mom fought the homeowners group to keep this fence. If you want to keep the geese out of your yard, this little fence does it. The geese are too lazy and dumb to fly over it. My mom read about it, got her neighbors together and put up the little 8 inch fence. The association threatened to fine mom and she said if you can find a better solution than I will go for it, otherwise I am keeping this fence up. And they changed the rules.

Janine, Tommy, TJ and Nicole visting from NC
I was clever here. This is my brother Ray and his girlfriend Andrea, but since Crista couldn't make the trip as she lives in NC, I had them sit in front of the portrait that Crista sat for when she was 5 years old. It was a Christmas Present for dad, who has since passed away (see May 2, 2008) Here's a family shot of the girls with their kids

but I love this outtake, can you see what's happening?
It was a beautiful day, made even more beautiful because Judy was able to spend a good part of the day with us. Please keep her in your prayers, the hard part is coming up as she begins chemo. Thank you. Happy One Year Anniversary to my blog today!!

Philadelphia JULY 4TH FIREWORKS from the Philadelphian re: dreaming of John Legend

It's not lost on me how important this day is to our country, The crowds at 8PM, it's begining to rain, but that doesn't stop them. Mike and I have this party every year; we keep the invites to a minumum mostly because it's a difficult to park in this area as we are at ground zero fireworks. But the worse part of the whole night is leaving, so the invite list is limited to people who live in Center City. The snipers take position on the roof of the Philadelphian, residents gather on their balconies, let the festivities begin.
I love catching the parade. Thanks to Southwest Airlines for sponsoring it.
Night falls and our guests begin to arrive at Mike's moms house, every year she is nice enough to vacate her place and settle into our place so we can have a shindig.
Although Rick lives "in the front" of the building, we're glad he stops by our place. Rick is a former writer for the soap "Another World" and several other TV shows. A few years back moved down her from, where else, NYC. I'm not even going to mention the Sixth Borough thing, I know how people hate that term, almost as much as "Staycation", another term I love. The two Jeff's stop by. Separated at birth united by love.

Laura Burkhardt was a pleasant surprise stopping up for a few moments on her was to her VIP seats to see John Legend. She was nice enough to take Bob along with her to enjoy the concert. Which I watched on TV, dry, but not as up close as Laura and Bob would scream to me.
They made it back just in time to enjoy the fireworks from the balcony with tall tales and merriment

Congress led the way for the encouragement of fireworks on the Fourth of July by authorizing a display on July 4, 1777, in Philadelphia, a year after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “At night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks, which began and concluded with thirteen rockets on the commons. Another colorful display took place in Philadelphia on July 4, 1779: “In the evening a sett [sic] of brilliant fireworks were exhibited, particularly excellent rockets, which, after ascending to an amazing height in the air, burst, and displayed thirteen stars.” http://gurukul.american.edu/heintze/fireworks.htmThe first fireworks in Boston took place on July 4, 1777. A newspaper reported: “In the evening Col. Crafts illuminated his park on the commons, threw several shells, and exhibited a number of fireworks.” Boston had another display in 1779 when thirteen rockets were fired. Congratulations to Carrie Nork and Dino Minelli who were married on July 5, 2008The Jeff's had a blast David Perkiss, the man of the moment, Matthew Vlahos; behind him is Steven Tyson and his beau Ben visiting Pittsburgh Bob still glowing about John Legend

Laura enjoying the party glow stick I handed out to my guests
Sometimes I wish I could invite the whole city up to see the fireworks from the balcony. They are so right there, and it's an amazing view.
Thanks for coming everyone, see you next year, er well some of you tomorrow night.
John Legend in concert

HADDONFIELD NJ JULY 4TH 2008 PARADE PHOTOS

Haddonfield NJ is a quaint little town about 10 minutes from Philadelphia. For me it is sandwiched between two of the towns I grew up in, Audubon until I was 8, and Cherry Hill, NJ where some of my family still lives. Haddonfield is a historic town dating back founded by Elizabeth Haddon (1680-1762), whose Quaker father, John Haddon, bought a 500 acre tract of land in the English colony of West Jersey to escape religious persecution. Elizabeth set sail alone from Southwark, England to the New World in 1701. I love the historic stately homes in Haddonfield, (this one can be yours for $745,000 Click here to learn more about this listing. )and the quaint front porched homes draped with flags, and at Halloween draped with spooky charactersBut for me it's the July 4th Parade every year that is my favorite as it reminds me of my childhood and the small town innocent atmosphere that I relish, that I don't always feel in a City of more than a million people.

The parade goes right down "Main Street USA" or Kings Highway; George Washington really did sleep here, or at least enjoy Iced Tea at the Indian King Tavern. Not a pint as Haddonfield has been a dry town since the early years.

The crowds are always plentiful and everyone gets into the spirit of the day wearing their red, white and blue
I love this parade for their political statements and community activism. In past years much has been said about politicians, the process or who they were supporting, this year not much about that but a lot to say about recylcing.
Can-can girls
Potholes and their effects of injuring runners, walkers, kids on bikes and car tiresThe best part of the parade is the kids with their decorated bikes, scooters, wagons "In Dog Pen Dence Day"and riding in a convertible with the familyThe Masons on parade

No parade would be complete without a politician or two. I choose to feature Louis Greenwald, who's mother was Mayor of Cherry Hill when I was growing up. (Greenwald was just 9 when his mother, the late Maria Barnaby Greenwald, answered a newspaper ad in early 1977 soliciting residents who were interested in good government. The housewife-turned- politician
went on to become a beloved Cherry Hill mayor, the first female freeholder director in the state and a county surrogate.)

For a local like me Haddonfield has contributed a lot to American Pop-culture, like did you know that In the movie When Harry Met Sally... (directed by Rob Reiner), Billy Crystal's character, Harry, is from Haddonfield.[18] ; Although the movies in the Halloween franchise are set in Haddonfield, Illinois, Haddonfield, N.J. is in fact the inspiration for the town. Debra Hill, the co-writer of the movie, grew up in Haddonfield, New Jersey.[19] (Also the high school in the movie is a replica of the one in Haddonfield); A scene in the movie AI takes place in Haddonfield, NJ and captures a shot of a house on Kings Highway. This is the location of the Flesh Fair, a rally of anti-robot activists.[20]; Photographer Frank Stefanko took two famous album covers for Bruce Springsteen in Haddonfield, Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978) and The River (1980).[21]
Haddonfield, New Jersey - World's First Dinosaur Skeleton discovered here
In October 2003, a statue was erected in downtown Haddonfield commemorating the World's First Dinosaur Skeleton Discovery in October, 1858. The Hadrosaurus foulkii was the first nearly complete dinosaur skeleton found, and the first to be mounted for public display. It sparked the start of the field of dinosaur paleontology, and can probably be blamed for the profusion of life-size dino statues across America.
I will be uploading photos to my photo album so that you can review them, right click and save a smaller version of buy a larger version for yourself.
